Acceptable forms of identification

ONE of the following forms of personal identification:

Passport

Your current New Zealand passport, or one that expired within the last two years.

A passport issued by or on behalf of the government of a country other than NZ that is current or has expired within the 2 years immediately preceding the date of application.

If you are named as a child on a NZ passport, apply to Internal Affairs for a descendent register record. This will serve as acceptable primary identification as specified in clause (3)(d) of the Driver Licensing Rule.

If you are named as a child on an overseas passport, present the passport you are named on plus one of the following: - your overseas birth certificate (translated if necessary); or - a NZ secondary school or tertiary education institution record certified by a teacher.

Driver Licence

A NZ driver licence or overseas driver licence that is current or has expired within the 2 years immediately preceding the date of application.

Certificate of Identity

The following would be accepted as a Certificate of Identity issued by NZ Internal Affairs:

A certificate of identity issued under the Passports Act 1992 that is current or has expired within the 2 years immediately preceding the date of application;

A confirmation of residence permit issued by or on behalf of the Government of NZ;
Citizenship Certificate;

A refugee travel document issued by or on behalf of the Government of NZ that is current or has expired within the 2 years immediately preceding the date of this application;
Confirmation of Citizenship Certificate;
Confirmation of Descent Registration.

Photo Identity Card

A NZ Police or NZ Defence Force photo-identity card issued to non-civilian staff that is current or has expired within the 2 years immediately preceding the date of application.

Any firearms licence containing a photograph that is issued under the Arms Act 1983, that is current or has expired within the 2 years immediately preceding the date of this application.

Birth Certificate

Your full NZ birth certificate

A full birth certificate issued in the Cook Islands, Niue, or Tokelau. A birth certificate issued in a country (other than NZ, the Cook islands, Niue, or Tokelau) containing information equivalent to that contained in a full NZ birth certificate.

Evidence of your address

ONE of the following forms of identification:

An account statement issued by your bank, building society, credit union or credit card company, issued within the last 12 months, which has your name and address on it

A telephone, gas, or electricity account, issued within the last 6 months, which has your name and address on it

Any other forms of identity, issued within the last 12 months that are acceptable are listed below:

If you are still at school or are attending a tertiary institution, school report or records certified by a teacher or lecturer would be accepted.

If you have no fixed abode, proof of mail being sent to a post office for collection is sufficient.
